Chapter 23: Numb

I hated him. I’d no longer be the servant of such a disgusting man. Zoran betrayed me and traded me off to his brother without any sense of guilt. He didn’t care. He couldn’t even look me in the eyes like a man and admit to what he had done. We were over. I’d never give Zoran another chance. He had gone too far this time.

I sat on top of a foothill outside the city wall on a sheet of ice. It was feeding off my anger, similar to fire. The frost was crawling through the grass and my wings had flaked off a decent-sized pile of snow around me.

At least an hour had passed since I flew off. I expected some kind of retaliation from the gods by now, but nothing happened. And that alone fueled my hatred for Zoran even more. He clearly didn’t care. The ice cracked on the hillside behind me. I turned sharply to see Raid. Ice fire boiled around me.

He held up his hands and gave me an anxious smile. “I’m not here because of Zoran, nor to talk you into coming back, I promise.”

I relaxed and allowed him to approach.

“It took me a while to track you down.” Raid crept a little closer. Dropping his bag on the ground, he sat on it. “Sorry about what happened.”

I shrugged. “I’m of no use, so there’s no point in keeping me around.” I drag my finger along the ice, causing shards to spike up from it.

“I still don’t fully understand the gods’ dynamic and how firebirds fit into that but it was pretty harsh for Zoran to trade you off.”

Shaking my head, I sucked in my lips. “Doesn’t matter. They can trade me back and forth all they want. It doesn’t mean I’ll follow it.”

Raid nodded. “At least, Aedus is going to help with the tal—”

“Don’t,” I stated firmly. “I don’t care about the taljinn.”

“You’d rather it destroy everything?”

“And kill all the mortals,” I added, gazing over the foothills. “But who would the gods torment if they didn’t have mortals around to kiss their asses? I doubt the taljinn was ever a real threat, to begin with.”

“That’s not true, Fin,” he replied. “You know it’s not.”

I stood and stretched my arms overhead. “It doesn’t concern me. It’s the fire element’s problems and I’m becoming less and less like them every day.” My wings curved forward. “It doesn't even hurt anymore.” I scoffed at the thought. “I’ve finally gone numb.”

“You’re a firebird, though.” He stood and picked up his bag. “As soon as the taljinn is gone, Zoran will give fire back and you can return to normal.”

“No,” I said firmly. “I won’t go back to that life.” I clenched my fists. “I won’t be a god’s pet anymore. I don’t need him. It’s far easier to maintain this icy state than it ever was to be a creature of fire.”

Raid frowned. “By the way you spoke about it last night, do you really want to give that up?”

“For now.
